Located in the foothills of the Ruwenzori Mountains in Western Uganda, the Ruwenzori Foundation stands as a beacon of hope and transformation. Established in 2004, this registered charity has harnessed the power of art and culture to promote positive development and unite heritage conservation with landscape architecture and the arts.
A Vision for Positive Development

The Ruwenzori Foundation’s mission is rooted in the belief that art can be a catalyst for change. By focusing on environmental restoration and community health, the foundation has transformed its 80 acres of land in Kyemihoko Village from degraded cotton fields into a thriving ecosystem. Eighteen years ago, the area was marked by impoverished biodiversity, with only fifty bird species recorded. Today, it boasts a flourishing woodland that is home to 207 bird species, a multitude of butterflies, over 30 reptiles, and a growing list of mammals. This remarkable recovery is a testament to the foundation’s commitment to landscape architecture that respects and enhances the natural environment.

The Arts Centre

At the heart of the Ruwenzori Foundation is its Arts Centre, designed with a focus on sustainability and community engagement. The Centre features a lost-wax foundry where Ugandan and international artists come together for regular residencies. Here, they create sculptures from wood, stone, marble, steel, and bronze, which are exhibited in an award-winning gallery designed by Kilburn Nightingale Architects. This architectural marvel not only serves as a space for artistic expression but also as a platform for training local craftsmen and women, ensuring that traditional skills are preserved and passed on to future generations.
The integration of art and architecture at the Ruwenzori Foundation exemplifies how cultural heritage can be conserved through contemporary practices. By providing a space where local and global artists collaborate, the foundation encourages a dialogue between tradition and modernity, enriching the cultural landscape of Uganda.
Community Health and Environmental Stewardship

In addition to its artistic endeavours, the Ruwenzori Foundation places a strong emphasis on community health. In partnership with the Ruwenzori Health Foundation, the Foundation has expanded its healthcare services from a basic clinic housed in shipping containers to a fully operational forty-bed cottage hospital. This development not only improves healthcare access for the local community but also reflects a commitment to sustainable architecture that meets the needs of the people it serves.
The Foundation’s initiatives extend beyond healthcare; they include road construction and the provision of clean water, which are vital for community development. By engaging with the local population, the Foundation ensures that its projects meet the needs and aspirations of the community, promoting a sense of ownership and pride.
A Model for Future Developments

The Ruwenzori Foundation serves as a model for how heritage conservation, landscape architecture, and the arts can converge to create sustainable communities. Its holistic approach demonstrates that by investing in the environment and the arts, we can revitalize not only the landscape but also the cultural fabric of a region.
As the foundation continues to expand its reach, with plans to double its acreage and further enhance biodiversity, it remains committed to forging links with other health providers and medical experts. This collaborative spirit is essential for enhancing resilience and ensuring that the benefits of its work are felt far and wide.

The Ruwenzori Foundation exemplifies the transformative power of art and architecture in heritage conservation. By merging environmental stewardship with cultural expression, it paves the way for a sustainable future that honours the past while embracing the possibilities of tomorrow.
